Keep Those Gutters Sparkly Clean
Out of site out of mind is a motto for many homeowners when it comes to gutters. Sure, you see them up there on the roof, but you might not notice the leaves and gook that have collected inside. You can tell yourself that you’ll get to it tomorrow, but will you?
Cleaning the gutters is one of those tasks that gets placed on your to-do list, but might not actually ever happen. Many North Shore neighborhoods are proud of their gorgeous tree-lined streets, but with fall already underway and winter around the corner, those trees are going to shed and the leaves will end up squarely in those North Shore gutters.
As those leaves decompose in your gutters, it becomes a breeding ground for all sorts of other junk, clogging the gutters even more. At this point you may be saying to yourself, “Oh, who cares if there is soot in my gutters, what harm could it possibly do?” Actually, it can cause a lot of trouble for your home.
Ignoring your gutters can lead to a number of problems. Gutters and downspouts are a key element in protecting your home during heavy rains. Gutters will prevent your roof’s fascia boards from getting wet and rotting out, and they also protect the underside of your roof from getting water stuck in there, which creates more problems and damage. Downspouts also need to be kept clean, as they are there to prevent water from pooling beside your foundation and seeping into your basement. If you’re not careful, clogged gutters can even lead to foundation problems, and that’s something you really don’t want. Not to mention the fact that an overly clogged gutter can make your home look unattractive.
Ideally, you should be cleaning your gutters twice a year to safely avoid problems. Additionally, to cut down some of the debris that gets trapped, make sure that tall trees and shrubs aren’t touching your home or arcing over your roof. Even if you have gutter covers, this isn’t solving the problem. These covers will work fine with larger leaves, but a lot of the small stuff still gets through. Additionally, now you not only have to clean the gutters, but you have to remove the gutter covers as well.
Let’s face it, cleaning the gutters isn’t a difficult task, but it is messy and potentially dangerous. You need to have the right tools, and you’ll need to feel comfortable climbing up a ladder to reaches your roof. After you’ve made it up the ladder, you’re going to have to balance up there and reach into the goop and do some scooping. Some recommend trying a leaf blower, but just imaging lugging that contraption up a ladder! Then, if you want to clean out your drainspouts, you’re going to have to grab a hose or a plumber snake if the hose doesn’t get the job done. With all this hassle, it’s easy to see why people often neglect their gutters, but for the health of your home it’s not a problem to ignore!
Cleaning your gutters is a task that you can certainly do on your own, but you don’t have to! You’re not alone with your gutters, as Castino Painting offers a gutter cleaning service that will do the job for you. Instead of reaching into the goop, hire a professional who knows how to balance on a ladder, and save your gutters – and home – from damage.
