Fall’s Coming—Learn More About Gutter Cleaning

Gutter Cleaning from Castino Painting and Home Services

It’s been a rainy summer, and chances are, that same rain will carry through the fall. With leaves falling from trees, it’s important to make sure your gutters are clean and capable of draining properly. At Castino Painting and Home Services, we’re proud to offer gutter cleaning to homeowners all over, but there are a few things you should know about gutter cleaning – why you need to do it, how often it should be done, and what happens if it’s put off too long, particularly.

Why Do Gutters Need to Be Cleaned?

If gutters aren’t kept clean, they can’t do the job required of them. Clogged gutters can force standing water to rest within the gutters, weighing them down. Since the purpose of gutters is to carry rainwater away from your roof and home, sending it down the side of your home and away from the foundation. If water rests near the foundation, it can seep into the foundation and cause damage. If the water can’t be carried away from the building, it can cause water damage near the roof, and seep into the walls where the ceilings meet. Clean gutters however, allow the water to flow freely away from your home, where it can cause no damage to the foundation or the walls, roof, and ceilings.

How Often Should You Clean, and How Can You Tell When They Need It?

Gutters that need to be cleaned will show that by having water coming over the top. Other signs of clogged gutters include seeing water in your basement, water dripping from the gutters even when there hasn’t been any rain, or finding water leaking in your home, typically where the ceilings meet the walls. Gutters should generally be cleaned twice a year—late spring, after all of the seeds, blossoms, “helicopters” and other plant material has fallen, and again in late fall, again, after all of the leaves have fallen off the trees. Cleaning at these intervals will help ensure that your gutters aren’t clogged during the rainy and snowy seasons of the year.

What Happens if Cleaning is Neglected, and How Is It Done?

If cleaning isn’t taken care of on a regular basis, the water can’t drain properly. It can erode the soil where it does drain, create black marks on your home from leaking through the gutters instead of draining through them, and if the water sits for too long, it can harbor a lot of bacteria and even cause mold within your home. As for how gutter cleaning is done, it’s a relatively simple process. Professional cleaners can do it quickly, with most houses taking less than an hour – if you do it yourself, it would likely take much longer, plus with a professional service, you don’t actually have to do the dirty work. There is also no risk of falling when you’re not doing it yourself—professionals are used to working on ladders and are therefore trained in the safest practices. Professional gutter cleaners use their tools to quickly remove all the debris and leaves from gutters, leaving your home clean and ready for the upcoming seasons.
